Rutgers May drop "greek" term

As last semester ended, the Hellenic and the Interfraternity Councils forged a new relationship. The two groups met for the first time on Dec. 18 in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs on the College Avenue campus to discuss the use of "greek" in reference to Rutgers fraternities and sororities. Chris Rochford, the former IFC president and a Rutgers College senior, said he has made an effort throughout his term to minimize the use of "greek" when referring to fraternity affairs. Rochford explained to Hellenic Council President Andreas Theodosius, also a Rutgers College senior, and Hellenic Council Representatives Constantin Adamides, a Rutgers College junior, and Michalis Persianis, a Rutgers College senior, that "greek" is not used exclusively by the University to describe fraternities and sororities but is recognized nationally. He said because the term "greek" is used nationally, "it should not inhibit the IFC members" from using it minimally.
